Performance Videos by Marika Nebesky

-SOAP-

-Keyboard-

I wanted to incorporate my hands in these two pieces because we are always using them to complete our daily tasks. Sometimes we forget, or at least I sometimes forget that we depend so much on touch. I wanted to incorporate the water and soap to show that a day’s work is done. I am washing away all the germs, and items that my hands have encountered throughout the day. Even the foam soap dispensers are fun to play with because foamy soap has a sense of depth to it because it is not just an ordinary drop of soap liquid. Taking an everyday task, such as washing our hands can be interpreted in so many ways. Also, the world of technology continues to become more and more advanced. Nowadays, you rarely see a person without a laptop or a technological device. I named this piece “Keyboard” because, yes I am typing on a computer keyboard, but there is also a sense of rhythm to each tap that I make on the computer keys.

  1. Marika, I really like your concept that you have for your videos. I like that you made them both go hand and hand with each other even though each video defines a different aspect of using our hands. I think it was really interesting how you used everyday activities and abstracted them to portray deeper meanings. Your videos remind me of the William Wegman videos that we saw in class. I think that the simplicity of your videos is also very effective because it allows you to focus on the movement of the hands.

  2. Marika,

Before reading your explanation of the videos, I initially picked up on the rhythmic motion of washing your hands. It was a fun play on something that we do every day. Reading your explanation reinforced that idea of playfulness in your video, so in that sense, it was very successful. Further, the video was well framed. I liked how there were no distractions from the subject and action.

When watching 'Keyboard,' I experienced a build up of anticipation.I was not certain what exactly was going to happen. As previeously mentioned, I watched the video before reading the description. I like the idea of our daily use of hands, but I felt that the video could have captured that better. I did like the hand motions during booting of the computer. It reminds me when I start my computer and the anticipation of it starting makes me tap and move my hands around. An area for improvement is from 1:08 to around 1:45. More movement or action needs to be incorporated. I wasn't sure if I hit pause at a point. Overall, interesting concepts, well carried out in the first video.
